My antique clock started working by itself

by Lara Whybrow

I had recently given birth to a beautiful little girl called Jasmine and it was midnight and she wanted milk. Her father Adrian groggily stumbled out of bed to go make her some formula because I was having trouble with my milk supply. He comes back into the room, warming up the bottle in a glass of hot water, and casually asks me when we got our antique clock working again. I almost dropped Jasmine, I was so surprised. And a little freaked out, truth be told.
The antique clock in question has not worked once in my 26 years of being on this planet. It's even got a barometer, which measures air pressure or something to help you know if a storm is on the way. It was and still is a family heirloom and most likely Jasmine will inherit it after me.

I got up and went to investigate. Sure enough as I got near to the clock I heard the tickety tock. And what time was showing on the clock? Five minutes to three. As an avid horror movie watcher I know that all spooky things always happen around 3am. What really added to this aura of creepiness was the fact that we were being watched by about five sets of eyes. You see, my fiance and I were staying with my mom for a bit and she loves porcelain dolls, especially ones like that freaky thing in The Conjuring. So we have this clock that started working by itself and these dolls all around - let's just say we got out of that room rather hastily...

So what can make a clock just start working again? If you have ever read Lyall Watson's The Secret Life of Inanimate Objects you will recall how many hundreds of stories exist in the Fortean Archives about clocks just working by themselves, stopping at the time someone dies, speeding up, slowing down and other strange phenomena. So I wasn't really that surprised that the clock started working again. You see, this house had had an increase in energy recently and I believe this increase affected the clock. Clocks contain quartz, and human energy can affect this quartz. That is why it is usually the old analog clocks that get affected in the stories in the Fortean Archives - not the digital ones. I believe that my daughter's vibrant energy and the fact that we had recently had a party with a lot of people all contributed to an increase in energy in the house and this is what prompted the clock to start working again. That is my personal theory and my instincts tell me I am right.

But we will never really know.
